Region of: Campania
Province of: Avellino
Village of: Greci
(Greci = Greeks)
- Location: 68 km northwest from city of Avellino and half way between Benevento and Foggia.
- Physical Features: Sited 823 m. in elevation near the summit of Mount Rovitello north of the Cervaro River.
- History: A Byzantine Greek colony founded shortly before 535 A.D. during the time of Emperor Justinian and the expedition of General Belisario to Italy. The village was destroyed by Saracens from Lucera in 908 A.D. Rebuilt again in 1039 by Prince Pandolfo of Benevento. Abandoned or greatly depopulated by early 13th century. In 1461, according to legend, was repopulated by the families of 22 Albanian soldiers with Skanderbeg’s expedition to Italy who were given the right to settle by Ferdinand I of Naples in payment for their military assistance to him. Alternate legends indicate some or all of the population may have returned to fight in Albania and that permanent settlement was not made in the village until their return in 1521.
