  • Location: 34 km southwest of city of Cosenza
  • Physical Features: Sited on western slope of Monte Pietralonga facing Tyrrhenian Sea
  • History: Founders were said to have been from regions of Croia and Scutari in Albania who fled Turkish invasions of those areas about 1484(?). Seventeen families, led by Nicolo Staffa of Corone, first made settlement on Cosenza coast between S. Lucido and Fiumefreddo Bruzio in village they named S. Pietro. About 1487(?) they moved inland due to constant Turkish raiding of their coastal settlement from the sea. Seven of the original families moved into the mountains on lands which were within the estate of the Marchese della Valle Mendoza. By legend, they observed a large rock with falcons circling it and decided this was a sign to build their church, Santa Maria del Castellucio, upon it.
