New York State, Albanian Independence Day proclamation

Proclamation

Whereas, the Empire State has a longstanding tradition of acknowledging significant milestones and events of historic importance to its many citizens of Albanian ancestry; therefore, they are proud to join with the Albanian-American community, both in New York State and throughout the Nation, to celebrate and observe this anniversary of Albanian independence; and

Whereas,a popular celebration known as “Flag Day” is held annually within the Albanian community as a means of commemorating November 28, 1912 — a significant date in their history as a country and throughout the Albanian diaspora; on this day, the Albanian leader Ismail Qemali raised the Albanian flag in the port city of Vlore, Albania, proclaiming Albanian independence after 500 years of Ottoman Turkish occupation; in a furthermore decisive act, the Congress officially issued the Vlore proclamation which marked the formal declaration of Albania’s independence; and

Whereas, the conquest of Albania by the Ottoman Empire and its subsequent rule of nearly five centuries brought great suffering to the Albanian people and caused vast destruction of their country’s economy, commerce, art and culture; in light of all that the Albanian people have endured throughout history, the actions of resistance fighters in defiance of the Ottoman rulers — partially motivated by religious reasons, namely, defense of the Christian faith remain a source of great inspiration to contemporary Albanians and all freedom-loving people; and

Whereas,today, the Empire State is fortunate to be home to a thriving population of Albanian-Americans who contribute to many aspects of life in this great State and Nation, and have found success in various areas of professional endeavor and cultural interest; it is therefore fitting that all New Yorkers join with the Albanian-American community as its members celebrate 89 years of independence and acknowledge the historical significance of a proud day that symbolizes renewed freedom, autonomy and optimism for Albanians both here in America and in the homeland;

Now, Therefore, I, George E. Pataki, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim November 28, 2001 as

ALBANIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY
in the Empire State.

Given under my hand and the Privy Seal of the State at the Capitol in the City of Albany this twenty-third day of November in the year two thousand one.
